IngramSpark Cover File Requirements: Specs, Bleed, and Upload Checklist

IngramSpark is the preferred print-on-demand distributor for authors who want their books available through wholesale channels — bookstores, libraries, and academic institutions — rather than just direct Amazon sales. The cover file requirements are stricter than KDP in some areas and more flexible in others. Getting the file wrong means rejection at upload, which delays your launch and may require a complete rebuild if your original file was not set up correctly. This guide covers the exact specifications, the differences from KDP, and a pre-upload checklist to avoid the most common rejection reasons.

Core Cover Specifications

Specification IngramSpark Requirement KDP Comparison
File format PDF (all versions accepted) PDF
Color mode CMYK required for print; RGB accepted but converted RGB accepted; converts at print
Resolution 300 ppi minimum at full output size 300 ppi minimum
Bleed 0.125 inches on all four sides 0.125 inches on all four sides
Safe zone margin 0.25 inches from trim edge on all sides 0.25 inches from trim edge
Barcode IngramSpark places automatically; do not include one KDP places automatically
Fonts Must be embedded or converted to outlines Must be embedded or converted to outlines
Transparency Flatten all transparency before export Flatten recommended

Spine Width Calculation

IngramSpark's spine width depends on page count and paper stock. The platform provides a Cover Template Generator on its website that produces a dimensioned PDF template including correct spine width once you enter your page count and paper type. Use the generated template rather than calculating by hand — IngramSpark's rounding rules differ from KDP's, and a spine that is 0.01 inches too narrow on IngramSpark will cause the cover title to print partially on the front panel, resulting in rejection. Specific spine formulas:

  • Cream paper (60 lb): page count x 0.0025 inches
  • White paper (60 lb): page count x 0.002252 inches
  • Color paper (60 lb): page count x 0.002347 inches

Note that IngramSpark allows spine text for books with 130 or more pages. For books under 130 pages, the spine must remain blank — spine text will cause rejection.

Color Mode: Why CMYK Matters on IngramSpark

KDP accepts RGB files and converts them at print. IngramSpark will also accept RGB and convert, but the conversion can shift colors significantly, particularly for images with vibrant blues, purples, and greens that have no direct CMYK equivalent. The safest approach for IngramSpark covers is to work in CMYK from the beginning if you are using a professional application like InDesign or Photoshop, or to convert to CMYK and soft-proof before export if you designed in RGB. Pay particular attention to colors in the range of 100% cyan with high saturation — these are common in urban fantasy and sci-fi covers and compress dramatically in CMYK conversion. View your cover in CMYK simulation before finalizing.

Critical Differences from KDP

If you have previously published on KDP and are adding IngramSpark distribution, these are the differences most likely to cause rejection:

  • Crop marks: KDP accepts files with or without crop marks. IngramSpark rejects files that include crop marks or registration marks in the PDF.
  • Embedded barcode: Do not include a barcode on the back cover. IngramSpark places one automatically in the lower right of the back cover. A designer-placed barcode will create a double-barcode, which causes rejection.
  • Template source: Always use IngramSpark's own Cover Template Generator for the spine width calculation rather than adapting a KDP template. The spine width formulas are different.
  • Transparency: IngramSpark is stricter about flattened transparency. Photoshop blend modes and InDesign effects that create transparency should be flattened before export using the PDF export's transparency flattening settings.

Pre-Upload Checklist

  1. File generated from IngramSpark Cover Template Generator for your specific trim size, page count, and paper stock.
  2. Resolution verified at 300 ppi or higher for all image elements.
  3. Color mode is CMYK and soft-proofed for color shift.
  4. All fonts embedded or converted to outlines.
  5. Transparency flattened.
  6. No crop marks or registration marks in the exported PDF.
  7. No barcode included in the design.
  8. All critical text (title, author name, spine text if applicable) is at least 0.25 inches inside the trim edge.
  9. Background extends to all four bleed boundaries (0.125 inches beyond trim on each side).
  10. Spine text omitted entirely if page count is below 130 pages.

A cover that passes this checklist has a high probability of passing IngramSpark's automated review on the first upload attempt. The review process typically completes within 24 to 72 hours; if rejected, the error report will specify which requirement failed. Keep the original working file — not just the exported PDF — so that corrections can be made without rebuilding from scratch.
